Dr. Michael Augustus Akagbor

Dr. Michael Augustus Akagbor works at the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), where he expertly oversees the Human Rights and Social Inclusion division. He possesses an impressive academic background, including a PhD (2022), an MPhil (2005), and a Bachelor of Arts with honors (2002) in Sociology from the University of Ghana, alongside an M.A. (2022) in Socio-Legal Studies from York University, Canada. Dr. Akagbor is an influential person in policy and advocacy, serving as a steering member of the Government of Ghana Open Government Partnership (OGP) and as a leading member of the Affirmative Action Coalition.

He has contributed to important discussions on human rights by presenting a report of the ‘State of Human Rights Defenders in West Africa’ at the 81st Session of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR). As a political sociologist, Dr. Akagbor’s research interests intersect various facets, including Democratic Development in Africa, Human Rights, Gender, The Rule of Law, and the socio-cultural and political constructions of reality within gendered spaces. His work has been vital to advancing these critical issues in Ghana and on the continent.
