Afia Asantewaa Asare-Kyei is an inaugural member of the Oversight Board (OSB), an independent global group of freedom of expression and human rights experts dedicated to improving how Meta moderates content on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. She also serves on the Board of the West Africa Democracy Radio (WADR) and the POS Foundation. Until recently, she served as Director for Accountability and Justice at the Open Society Foundations, Africa, and worked with the UN, Save the Children, and USAID.
Afia is a human rights lawyer and development professional with extensive experience in strategy development, program design, monitoring and evaluation, and stakeholder engagement across Africa. She specializes in legal advocacy and transformative social programs focused on accountability, human rights, and empowerment of marginalized groups. Passionate about Africa’s development, she has deep knowledge of regional mechanisms and institutions. Afia holds an LLB and LLM degrees from the Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, South Africa. She is a dual Ghanaian and South African citizen.
