Students of the Cheikh Anta Diop University from Bandègne held a press briefing to denounce the lack of funding from the municipality for the past three years. They indicated that their mayor had promised to give them subsidies, which had not been paid, hence the demonstration.
The students highlighted some difficulties faced such as sleeping in the hallway of the University, commuting from distant places, among others thereby forcing some students to drop out of school. They made an appeal to the government and stakeholders to attend to their needs.
A situation where students from other parts of the country are able to access residential facilities, among others, whereas another section of students are unable to access same facilities due to lack of funding is basically unfair. Access to educational facilities are necessary to aid the teaching and learning process, and especially where government officials have made pledges to these students who have relied on same promises, they should fulfill same. There should be equal access to opportunities to promote academic freedom in the universities.
