First year masters students of the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar expressed their frustrations over delayed scholarship payments, but they were met with police interference resulting in clashes.
The police rather unfortunately resorted to using tear gas to manage the situation, which heightened tensions and led to several injuries.
Students’ rights to engage in peaceful demonstrations to express their grievances should not be violated by law enforcement agencies. There should be an enabling environment for students to express their frustrations through meaningful demonstrations without political interference.
