Students of Nimba University have expressed their frustrations over an ongoing strike, which had disrupted normal academic activities in the school. Students are unable to complete their coursework pro prepare for the final examinations, scheduled for the month. Some students also indicated that the situation had had a toll on their finances, and brought confusion as some students have left campus and others still hanging around.

The University’s Faculty Association had embarked on the strike in response to unresolved grievances such as demands for salary increment, housing and research allowances, improved working conditions, resolution to administrative issues, among others. The Faculty Association emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in addressing their needs, as they called on government and university administration to act swiftly.

Indefinite strikes by staff of the University impacts negatively on the academic freedom of students, as they are unable to undertake the normal academic activities of teaching and learning. Specifically in this instance, students are financially handicapped and are uncertain as to when the strike ends, and whether or not to remain on campus. The University’s Faculty’s should be addressed by the government and stakeholders to enable academic activities resume without interferences. Moreover, in the event where strike actions ensue as a result of unresolved grievances, students should be well informed on the prevailing conditions, so they are not left stranded in their academic pursuit.
