Attack Types:

Institution(s): Legon, University of Ghana

Region & Country: Ghana

New or Ongoing: Ongoing Incident

The College of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) announced an indefinite strike starting 2 January 2025. The strike followed repeated government failures to honor a National Labour Commission arbitration award and implement agreed‑upon terms. The industrial action has halted teaching, project supervision, and other essential services across Colleges of Education.

Impact on Academic Freedom:

The CETAG strike highlights the vulnerability of academic freedom when systemic injustices affect staff. Disruption of teaching and learning compromises students’ right to uninterrupted education and delays academic progression. To protect the integrity of higher education, it is vital for government authorities to honour commitments and create an environment where staff and students can operate in an atmosphere of trust, stability, and mutual respect.
