In March 2025, hundreds of contract staff at Hawassa University faced threats of termination after voicing concerns over persistent pay disparities. Reports indicate that the Hawasa University Management responded with intimidation rather than dialogue, and that affected staff were denied access to fair and transparent institutional grievance mechanisms. This climate of fear and silence has contributed to deteriorating staff morale and eroded trust in university governance structures.
Comments/Recommendations
ACAF strongly urges Hawassa University and similar institutions to uphold fair labor standards in accordance with national labor laws and international best practices. Institutions of higher learning must guarantee the right of academic and administrative staff to raise concerns without fear of retaliation. Establishing clear, independent complaint and whistle-blower protection mechanisms is critical. Protecting staff rights is not only a legal obligation but also foundational to sustaining academic freedom, fostering a supportive learning environment, and ensuring the long-term integrity of higher education institutions.
