📢📢 Call for Applications: OSF/IIE-Funded Research Opportunity on Academic Freedom in Africa
We’re excited to announce a call for proposals for a research project titled “Postulating a Relative Universalist African Perspective of Academic Freedom.”. This initiative, supported by the Open Society Foundations (OSF) and the Institute of International Education (IIE), aims to deepen understanding of academic freedom from an African perspective, assess the impact of colonial legacies, and develop the African Principles on Academic Freedom (APAF).
We are inviting research teams to apply for one of three research components:
– Tracing academic freedom in Africa’s premodern universities
– Developing scorecards to measure academic freedom in Africa’s colonial university system
– Identifying gaps in African documents on academic freedom
Funding
Get up to $10,000 per research component
Key Dates
Application deadline: 20 March 2025
Results announcement: 20 April 2025
Project period: 1 May – 30 November 2025
Submission of final report: 30 November 2025
Who can apply?
Each research team should consist of:
– A senior academic (5+ years of research experience)
– Two postgraduate students (Master’s & PhD) working on academic freedom, higher education, or human rights
