Date of Incident: March 7, 2025

Attack Types:

Institution(s): University of Algeria

Region & Country: Algeria

New or Ongoing: New Incident

Students at the University of Algeria launched protests  in March 2025 against mounting academic pressure and the persistent lack of administrative responsiveness. In response, authorities resorted to arrests and increased security presence on campus, further heightening tensions and creating a climate of fear and suppression among the student population.

Comments/Recommendations
ACAF is deeply concerned by the use of security measures to suppress peaceful student protests. Academic institutions must serve as spaces for open expression, critical debate, and participatory governance. Algerian authorities should foster an environment that respects students’ rights to peaceful assembly and free expression. ACAF urges the administration to initiate inclusive and transparent dialogue with student representatives to address underlying academic and welfare concerns rather than responding with repression.
