Date of Incident: February 20, 2025

Region & Country: Tunisia

New or Ongoing: Ongoing Incident

In February 2025, Tunisia recorded 427 protest movements, an alarming 138.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024, which saw 179 protest actions. These demonstrations were largely triggered by the death of a student in Kairouan and delays in faculty recruitment, reflecting broader concerns over systemic neglect in the education sector. Social actors, including students and faculty, continued to mobilize in response to deteriorating socio-economic conditions and the perceived failure of authorities to address their grievances.

Comments/Recommendations
ACAF is concerned about the situation and urges the Tunisia government to urgently reinforce institutional safety measures and ensure transparent, timely communication with all educational stakeholders. Immediate efforts should be made to create academic environments that are not only physically secure but also supportive of students’ mental and emotional well-being. Investing in student welfare, accelerating recruitment processes, and engaging in inclusive dialogue with civil society will be critical to restoring trust and stability in the education sector.
